The West End BIZ debuted a new addition to its outdoor mural gallery celebrating the 100th anniversary of Manitoba women achieving the vote.
The piece called A Woman’s Parliament was created at the corner of Sargent Avenue and Furby Street by local artist Mandy Van Leeuwen. It features women’s suffragettes including Nellie McClung.
“It is a beautiful representation of the journey for women's rights which is exactly why I wanted to sponsor it,” said Nighat Tariq, who donated the wall space.
The mural was unveiled Tuesday morning, with members of the Nellie McClung Foundation on hand to view the piece.
“How wonderful to have this mural illustrating the story of Nellie McClung and so many others who worked tirelessly to gain the rights for women to vote,” said Lila Goodspeed, chair of the Nellie McClung Foundation. “It truly will keep her legacy alive.”
This is the first of three new murals that will be introduced this summer by the West End BIZ. A Woman’s Parliament will become part of the BIZ’s mural tour route.
