It's looking a lot like Christmas in the city and even though it’s not that cold this year, Winnipeg is one of the lucky places getting snow for the special day.

Just like every year, when the temperature drops, people flee to warmer climates.

Joshua Salamandyk, from Marlin Travel, said the warmer-than-normal temperatures made for a slow start to the travel season - but that quickly changed.

"In the past couple of weeks, we've really seen a big increase because of the snow and the cold. People are really eager to book their trips and get out of here," said Salamandyk.

And although some people look to escape the cold, others took full advantage of what a white Christmas has to offer.

"I mean, I don't know why anybody would run away from this. I look forward to the winter and ice fishing and I do more ice fishing than I do open-water fishing, in the summer,” said Pat Kehoe, who was ice fishing in Lockport.

Kehoe and Howie Singer are coworkers, but today, they decided to ditch the office and hit the ice for a little ice fishing.

The two wanted to squeeze in some ice time before their big Christmas Eve dinners.

"Special dinner, caught fresh out of the river and on the pan tonight,” said Kehoe.

And it seems like Kehoe isn't the only one enjoying the winter weather.

Dozens of people were out at The Forks, taking in the cooler climate.

But this isn't the case for other Canadian cities, where temperatures climbed as high as 16 C.

In Barrie, Ont. people were out golfing and enjoying the weather in short sleeves.

It’s a green Christmas for many, but not for Winnipeg.

"Clearly Winnipeg, for instance, with 12 cm of snow yesterday, and the day before, we're going to have a, what we call, white Christmas,” said Natalie Hasell from Environment Canada.

"As we've seen here, it's been above normal, not only here, but pretty much everywhere in the country, but especially in the east."

Hasell says as a result of El Nino, the above-normal temperatures are here to stay.

As for Kehoe, having a white Christmas is a wish come true.

"Perfect Christmas wish - going up to a warm house tonight have some fresh fish, couple drinks. It'll be great,” he said.

Environment Canada says although temperatures may be mild, travelers should still take precautions as conditions can quickly change.
