Starting Sunday evening, barricades will be going up on one of the busiest traffic arteries in Winnipeg.

Crews are repairing the Fort Garry Bridge on Bishop Grandin Boulevard.

More than 60 000 vehicles drive that route everyday. Now the number of lanes available to them has been decreased by half.

While work is being done on the westbound bridge, the eastbound bridge will turn into a two lane highway, with one lane running in each direction.

The city is asking drivers to start using alternate routes. They also say that transit routes 16, 51, 75, 76, and 101 will continue to run during construction.

The closure is expected to last 5 months, all four lanes will re-open in September. Then in the spring of 2009, the eastbound bridge will close for five months while traffic is diverted to the west side.

The project includes widening the bridge, and adding an extra exit lane onto Pembina Highway. The structure will also be reinforced with steel girders and new concrete decks.

The city has more information about the project on their website.
