The city's Downtown Development Committee will meet on Monday to consider a proposal to build a hotel and restaurant on riverfront property at Pacific Avenue and Waterfront Drive.

The agenda for the meeting shows a recommendation that the city approves plans for the development by Sunstone Boutique Hotels to go forward.

"The proposed project consists of a multi-storey boutique hotel, associated parking and the redevelopment of the Harbourmaster building into a restaurant or similar use," the city documents say.

The city would enter into a 50-year-lease agreement with Sunstone Boutique Hotels. Sunstone would be responsible for extending water and sewage service to the property and any flood protection required, according to the documents.

The recommendation before the committee points out several benefits to the proposal, including that the new construction, worth $11 million, would provide tax revenue to the city and that new hotel rooms would be built near the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

The recommendation also takes into account that Sunstone successfully built the nearby Sky Waterfront Condominiums.

A spokesperson for Sunstone said the company has no comment at this point in time.
