A new way to handle waste in Winnipeg officially opened to the public Thursday.
The Brady Road Landfill opened the city’s first 4R depot where people are able to drop off items to be recycled, reused, composted or resold.
The goal is to make it easier for everyone to lessen their impact on the environment.
Located on Brady Road, the depot will replace the current drop off point for garbage within the landfill.
There will be no cost to customers if all discarded items are recyclable; all else will go in the trash for a fee.
Acceptable items for the new depot include:
- electronic waste such as televisions, computers and cell phones
- household hazardous waste including household cleaners, paint and propane tanks
- batteries
- motor oil, filters, and containers
- tires
- scrap metal
- large appliances
- bicycles
- large plastic items
- clean timber, lumber and wood
- ceramics and porcelain
- rubble and masonry
- clean fill
- tree wood waste
- leaf and yard waste
- recyclables accepted in the curbside program
To make dropping off materials easier, the city urges people to use its list of vehicle packing tips.
The city said the 4R depot is an important part of its plan to keep more than half of Winnipeg’s waste out of the landfill.
