Two city councillors want Winnipeg to scrap its proposal for a kitchen organics collection program.
Public consultation is set to take place on three options for pickup.
The annual cost for homeowners would range from $55 to $100 a year, depending on what option is chosen.
On Friday, councillors Ross Eadie and Russ Wyatt said the entire program should be suspended. Eadie said people earning low incomes don't want to pay another tax.
The councillors want the initiative debated and reviewed; they're calling for a community-based organics plan in coordination with non-profit groups.
"To double, or triple potentially, the tax on homeowners is just unrealistic and unfair,” said Wyatt. “The fact of the matter is there are literally thousands, tens of thousands, of people in Winnipeg that are already doing their own organic recycling."
Other city councillors have also spoken out against the plan to charge homeowners more to pick up fruit, meat and pet waste from the curb for compost.
It’s estimated that organics make up 40 per cent of waste at Brady Road Landfill.
The councillors plan to table a motion at next week's council meeting.
