Emergency crews were on scene for more than five hours at the Delta Hotel in downtown Winnipeg after reports of a suspicious package.
Police say around 150 hotel guests were evacuated Thursday afternoon. The guests were then sent to the RBC Convention Centre.
Around 4:00 p.m., Winnipeg police were called to the Delta Hotel for a report of a suspicious package in an entranceway near the back of the building.
“Security within Delta first noticed the package, notified their supervisors and ultimately members of the Winnipeg Police Service were notified,” said Constable Jason Michalyshen with the Winnipeg Police Service.
Police tape cordoned off the areas of Hargrave Street, St. Mary Avenue, Carlton Street and York Avenue that surround the hotel.
Shortly after 6:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service bomb unit arrived at the scene. Officers deployed the robot and used measures to disrupt the item.
"Right now, we're just exercising every precaution we can...safety is our highest priority," said Michalyshen, adding police have been dealing with a number of these calls lately.
Police say the suspicious item did not pose a threat to the public, but officers continue to investigate.
Hotel guests were provided with food and drink in a private room at the RBC Convention Centre. Guests appreciated the hotel’s efforts.
“I would say they’re doing fine, keeping everybody as comfortable as they can,” said Steve Millen, who is visiting from British Columbia.
But all guests CTV spoke to were exhausted after the ordeal.
“I’m ready to go lay down. I’m tired, it’s been a long day,” said Irene Levesque from The Pas.
Police cleared the scene around 9:30 p.m. when the area was deemed safe and all roadways were re-opened.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 204-986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
