A Manitoba man driving on Jefferson Avenue says someone posed dead rabbits near the side of the road, close to King Edward Street in Winnipeg.

“Some looked mutilated with blood spattered on them,” said Jason Hawkins.

He called police and they’re now investigating the grotesque discovery.

“We’re dealing with a very unique and bizarre scenario,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen from Winnipeg police.

He said he can’t recall any case where someone posed dead animals publicly in this way before.

Whether it’s deemed a crime depends on how the animals were killed and what motivated someone to stage their bodies. To do that, police need to find whoever is responsible.

Jason Hawkins hopes officers are successful.

"It's one thing to kill an animal for food, but for a spectacle? I definitely don't agree with it,” he said.

Police believe the rabbits may have been wild animals, but how they were caught and killed remains unknown.

Officers hope anyone with information will contact police.
