Winnipeggers with ties to Kenya are watching the aftermath of a deadly terrorist attack in the capital city of Nairobi.

Thirty nine people, including two Canadians, were killed Saturday when rebels armed with grenades and assault rifles stormed an upscale mall.

The president of the Kenya Association of Manitoba, Peter Karari, is originally from Nairobi. He said there is a feeling of grief, sadness and uncertainty among members of the Kenyan community in the province.

“What can we do?” said Karari. “Not only as Kenyans but also as the international community. While Kenya is the target this moment, we don’t know who will be the target tomorrow.”

Karari has been in touch with some family members in Nairobi, but he has not heard from relatives who own a business close to the mall.

According to Karari, about 500 people make up Manitoba’s Kenyan community.

The Canadian government said it is prepared to help Kenya recover from the terrorist attack.
