After numerous collisions overnight, police are warning drivers to be cautious on the roads Friday morning.

Most of the collisions were minor, with no injuries, police say. However, one person is in unstable condition in hospital after a collision on Sturgeon Road near Saskatchewan Avenue, police say.

The crash occurred around 2 a.m., but Sturgeon Road was still blocked off around the scene by the start of the morning commute.

A freezing raining warning issued for Winnipeg by Environment Canada for Winnipeg on Thursday night was lifted by Friday morning, but the roads were still slick with ice.

Many highways, including Highway 1 West from Winnipeg to the Saskatchewan border and Highway 75 from Winnipeg to the U.S. border, were closed Friday morning, but reopened at about 8:30.

All schools are closed in the Pine Creek, Red River Valley, Seine River, Prairie Rose school divisions Friday because of icy conditions. St. Adolphe Nursery School and Child Care is also closed.

In the Prairie Spirit School Division, Glenboro School, Treherne Elementary School and Treherne Collegiate are closed.

No Brandon School Division buses are operating outside the city due to icy roads and several road closures. Alexander, O'Kelly and Spring Valley schools are also closed.

Around 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Winnipeg police advised that northbound and southbound traffic on St. Mary's Road between Lyndale Drive and Champlain Street was closed to due to downed hydro lines.

More freezing rain is forecasted for later in the day.
