Along with Christmas presents comes Christmas waste, and the City of Winnipeg is reminding people to use their blue bins this holiday season.

The bins can be filled with Christmas cards, cardboard boxes and plastic packaging with the recycling triangle on it.

Items that cannot be recycled and should be thrown in the garbage include foam, film and gift wrap, as it often has non-paper elements in it like foil.

You should also take a second look before taking your blue box to the curb, said city waste diversion supervisor, Randy Park.

“Make sure you have all the instructions, all the toy parts, so that you are not looking for it later,” said Park. Gift boxes can also be recycled, said Park, but they can also be held onto for future occasions.

If your blue box is overflowing with Christmas leftovers, you can either hang on to some of those items until your next collection, or excess can be dropped off at one of Winnipeg’s seven depots.
