Greg Selinger is resigning as leader of the Manitoba NDP, after leading the party to a crushing defeat in the provincial election.

Selinger's New Democrats have fallen to Brian Pallister's Progressive Conservatives, who are set to form a majority government.

In a speech at party headquarters in Winnipeg, Selinger told supporters that in a democracy, "the people are always right."

He said he spoke with Pallister and congratulated him on a well-fought campaign.

He also vowed that the NDP would continue to "fight for fairness" in its new role as the Official Opposition.
