It was a race against time in the community of St. Lazare Wednesday night. Village officials are being told more water is on the way after heavy rains in Saskatchewan.

Crews worked through the night to raise the ring dike protecting St. Lazare by one foot.

Mayor Martin Dupont tells CTV News the added protection is needed because of increased flows expected on both the Qu'Appelle and Assiniboine Rivers.

Dupont said the increased flows are due to both precipitation from recent rain and snow storms upstream.

He said the water is coming quickly and officials will be further assessing what impact that will have on his community.

Several homes have already been flooded outside the community's ring dike in the St. Lazare area, forcing more than 20 people to become evacuees.

About 250 people live in the village of St. Lazare itself.
