Winnipeg police have arrested two teens believed to be involved in an attempt to run-down an officer in the Polo Park parking lot last month.

Police say someone tried to run-over an officer in a stolen vehicle in the lot on Feb. 25.

The officer fired a shot at the vehicle in an attempt to stop it.

There were no reported injuries in the incident.

The suspects took off and the stolen car was found later that night on Huber Street. Police immediately began searching for the suspects.

On March 6, police arrested a 17-year-old boy. He is now charged with:

  • Theft Over $5,000
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime
  • Failure to comply with sentence or disposition

On Tuesday, police arrested a 16-year-old boy. He is charged with nine offences:

  • Theft Over $5,000
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault a Peace Officer
  • Flight from a police officer
  • Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
  • Drive while disqualified
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime
  • Fail to remain at scene of accident x 2
  • Failure to comply with sentence or disposition

Both teens have been detained in custody. Their names can't be released because they are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Shortly after the incident occurred, then president of the Winnipeg Police Assoc. said the incident was an indication of a growing disrespect criminals have for police.

"It shows the prevalence of violence that's out there," said Loren Schinkel, who has since stepped down from his position. "There's a total disdain for front-line defense officers in the City of Winnipeg."

It wasn't long after that another, similar incident occurred. A car involved in a high-speed pursuit charged at police on March 9 in the 1300 block of Burrows Ave. One officer shot at the driver. There were no reported injuries.

Officers took four men into custody.
