When a car involved in a high-speed pursuit charged at police early Sunday morning, one officer put an end to it by shooting at the driver.

The chase started near Redwood Avenue and McPhillips Street, and ended in a back alley in the 1300 block of Burrows Avenue just after midnight. Police say an officer was laying down a spike belt to stop the car, when the driver charged him.

Police confirm one shot was fired, but that no one was hurt. Officers took four men into custody. It is not known if the car was stolen.

CTV's Stacey Ashley talked with witnesses at the scene. They saw police take after the suspects on foot. The suspects fled the car after the shot was fired. Police will not confirm how many of the suspects are still in custody.

It was only two weeks ago that an officer shot at car thieves when they tried to run him down in the middle of a busy parking lot outside Polo Park Shopping Centre.

And in two separate incidents in November, car thieves tried to ram officers. Both times officers fired their weapons. There were no injuries in any of these incidents.

On a per capita basis, Winnipeg officers fire their guns more than officers in any other Canadian city.
