It’s no ordinary race, but it’s one 27-year-old Winnipeg man Corey Gallagher has been training for and captured.

In Austin, Texas on Wednesday, Gallagher captured the win in the Beer Mile World Championship.

The event, put on by Flo Track, has just a few simple rules. Competitors must drink a 355 ml can of beer before each lap of the race they run.  The beer mile is run on a 400 metre track, racers take four laps around the track before finishing. At the end of the race, it’s their choice if competitors want to celebrate with another cold one.

The only penalty to a beer mile race, if a competitor vomits before they finish, they must complete one extra lap at the end of the race.

Gallagher won with a time of five minutes and 23 milliseconds.  This race was also a personal best time for the Winnipegger.  Gallagher said he has a running history and it’s evolved into this event.
