The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Chief says most people who don't pay for an ambulance trip can't afford the bill.

Chief John Lane said the homeless, people going through bankruptcy and those who have died make up the majority of cases.

The city's finance committee approved a $415,000 cost overrun for the fire paramedic service to cover unpaid ambulance bills.

Chair Marty Morantz said it might be time to strike a new deal with the province over ambulance fees as the higher level of government is responsible for health care.

An ambulance ride can cost $500.
