Shoppers and store employees alike should take a close look at any American money that comes into their hands in the city, said Winnipeg police.
Officers issued an advisory on Friday that they have received reports of counterfeit U.S. currency being used in Winnipeg, particularly $20 and $50 bills.
If anyone suspects they have received a counterfeit bill, police say they are under no obligation to accept. Shoppers and store staff should ask for another form of change or payment.
If possible, shop owners should keep any suspected counterfeit bill and try to get identification from the suspect, police said.
Police discourage anyone from doing anything that would put their safety at risk.
Anyone with information about suspected counterfeit bills or people who might possess them should call 204-986-6231 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786- TIPS (8477).
