A Winnipeg father is grateful his son is alive, after he was hit by a truck while in a convenience store.
The crash happened on the morning of July 7thin MD’s Convenience Store on Munroe Avenue.
Shawn Sutherland and his two sons frequent the store.
His eldest, aged eight, was across the store getting a Slurpee.
Sutherland and his seven-year-old son were near the door playing an arcade game.
They only made it a few steps away before a truck crashed through the doors.
Sutherland immediately jumped into action, pulling his youngest son from underneath the truck.
“When I was reaching underneath the vehicle, the tires were still spinning at 70 kilometres an hour. It was going fast enough to melt the tiles inside the store,” said Sutherland.
His son walked away with a cut finger, but Sutherland said he’s not doing as well emotionally.
Sutherland said his son lives with autism and is non-verbal, and he is worried he may not be able to clearly express how the crash affected him.
“He doesn’t want to leave my side. Every time I leave the side, he cries,” said Sutherland.
Sutherland still shops at the store, but said his son won’t go back.
He wants drivers and businesses to be more careful.
“I think all businesses that have bay windows, must put pillars in front. If they don’t they’re going to end up with the same problem we just had,” said Sutherland.
Sutherland said he hasn’t received any updates from the police about the crash.
