Two orphaned polar bear cubs that have been at the Assiniboine Park Zoo since the end of September will make their public debuts on Friday.

The Assiniboine Park Conservancy made the announcement in a press release Monday morning.

“The cubs will spend a few more days exploring their outdoor enclosure off exhibit before making their public debut on Friday,” Dr. Brian Joseph, Director of Zoological Operations at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, said in the release

“They will remain on exhibit at the IPBCC for several months, growing and adjusting to their new home. When we feel they are ready we will begin the process of introducing them to our other bears in the Journey to Churchill exhibit.”

The orphaned cubs are also the subject of a naming contest.

Several name options were put forward by students at George Saunders Memorial School, Gillam School, and Fox Lake School, and the public will be given the chance to vote on them in a Facebook poll.

The options for the male cub are: Blizzard, Jack and Keewatin.

The choices for the female cub are: Crystal, Trinity and Star.

The poll closes at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the zoo, the sibling cubs were spotted by helicopter along the Hudson Bay coastline.

Efforts made to locate the bears’ mother were unsuccessful and it was decided that the young cubs lacked the necessary survival skills to survive without her.

Upon arriving at the zoo, the cubs were subject to a 30-day quarantine period.

Their new names will be announced when the cubs are unveiled to the public on Friday.
