Under a new bill will that came into effect Friday, victims of domestic violence will be offered leave from work and guaranteed job security if they have to take time off work starting June 1.
Employees who have been at the same company for 90 days will be entitled to five days of paid leave taken intermittently or combined, another five days of unpaid leave taken together or combined, or up to 17 weeks unpaid leave taken in one continuous period.
The amendment to the Employment Standards Code enables employees to use the leave to seek medical attention caused by domestic violence for themselves or their child.
It also allows them to obtain victim services, counselling, time to relocate or seek legal help.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the domestic violence paid leave portions of the bill came into effect April 1.
