Mayor Sam Katz said the Sherbrook Pool could reopen next year.

Advocates fighting to get the pool up and running fear that won't happen now that the city has earmarked millions of dollars for new YMCAs. Katz said that funding has nothing to do with Sherbrook Pool.

Katz said if the community wants the old building fixed up, the city may be able to find the $2.8 million needed to re-open in 2014.

"I believe we can get the Sherbrook Pool opened. I truly do believe that,” said Katz. “When I make that statement, I’m referring to the monies that are required to, one -  put it in a safe state of affairs so that people can enter and exit, use the facility, and number two - to do the upgrades on the mechanical and the electrical.”

The pool closed a year ago over safety issues with the 80-year-old building.
