A police officer in Brandon is recovering in hospital after being stabbed five times.

The Brandon Police Service said emergency crews responded to a fire at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the 1200 block of Rosser Avenue.

A witness told police a 19-year-old suspect damaged property and set a fire in an apartment.

“There were many other officers working late yesterday who were involved in investigation of the two separate yet conjoined incidents of the suspected arson in the 1200 block of Rosser Avenue followed by the stabbing incident involving our member,” said Brandon's Chief of Police in a statement.

Police received a tip the suspect was in the area of Brandon University. Officers located the suspect at 20th Street and Lorne Avenue.

As an officer tried to arrest him, the suspect stabbed the officer four times in his leg and once in the side of his chest with a small folding knife.

The 31 year old went to Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he was treated and released. The six-year member of the force is recovering at home with his family.

Officers arrested the suspect and his 16-year-old brother at the scene. The brother was not involved in the assault.

Police charged the 19 year old with several offences, including aggravated assault.

He was to spend Monday night at Brandon Correctional Center and appear in court Tuesday morning.

“Now our primary focus is on the after care of all of our members involved in the events of yesterday evening,” said the Chief of Police.
