OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says Canadians increased their overnight travel to the United States in the fourth quarter of last year.

They made 832,000 overnight trips to visit friends and relatives, an increase of 19.4 per cent compared with the same period in 2011.

Pleasure travel remained the most common reason for overnight travel to the United States with 2.7 million trips in the quarter, a 5.1 per cent increase over the fourth quarter of 2011.

Business travel rose 3.3 per cent in that same period.

Travel from the United States to Canada also rose in the quarter, with business travel up 3.5 per cent, pleasure travel up 1.9 per cent and travel to visit friends and relatives up 2.1 per cent.
