A Winnipeg community is rallying together after vandals caused significant damage to a children's play structure, which now has to be demolished.

Two weekends ago, the play structure at King Edward School on Selkirk Avenue was hit by vandals, with the damage being so bad that inspectors have now condemned the structure.

"Just imagine – this playground without a structure to play on," said Spencer Clements, school principal. "It is quite a sad thought."

The structure is slated to be torn down in the next two weeks.

"It's frustrating that a few kids or a few people want to ruin it for the majority who really do take care of it," said Susan Keller, a parent.

Grade 1 student Serenity Isfeld decided that instead of birthday gifts this year, she'd ask for donations to put towards a new structure, raising $140.

"That's the kind of commitment we have from this community. It's a wonderful community," said Clements.

The playground had been hit by vandals before, but the damage was not as severe as the incident a couple weeks ago.

"On the weekend, somebody destroyed the bouncy bridge and I loved that bouncy bridge," said Leo Blyth, a Grade 1 student.

The school hopes to build a new play structure and do some landscaping that will cost around $120,000, cash which is not in the school's budget.

Donations are being accepted to go towards a new play structure.

Cheques can be made payable to "Children's Heritage Fund" and can indicate that it is for King Edward School's play structure. They can be mailed to: The Winnipeg School Division, 1577 Wall St. East, Winnipeg MB R3E 2S5.

Cheques can also be dropped off in person at the school at 825 Selkirk Ave. during regular school hours.

Officials said tax receipts will be issued for all donations over $10. Information is also available online at: http://ww.wsd1.org/departments/heritagefund.htm
