You can once again recycle your old and used electronics as the provincial government has announced it will continue its e-waste recycling program.

Depots will be open this year between May and September, where you can drop off things like TV's, VCR's and cell phones free of charge. The electronics are shipped to Sims Recycling in Brampton, Ont., where they are recycled in an environmentally friendly way.

Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau made the announcement Tuesday.

"The first round of confirmed locations is getting ready and we are excited to be able to tell people these items will once again have an alternative to the landfill," he said in a news release.

Last year, Manitobans dropped off more than 305,000 kilograms of e-waste at temporary collection depots set up in partnership with local communities, businesses and non-profit recycling centres. The equivalent of 30 semi-trailer loads of electronic waste was kept out of landfills. There were four depot locations in Winnipeg, and collection points were established in 26 communities throughout Manitoba.

E-waste depots will accept the following materials from residential sources only:

  • TVs
  • VCRs
  • Stereos
  • Microwaves
  • Phones
  • cell phones
  • computer equipment
  • laptops
  • printers
  • scanners
  • fax machines
  • copiers
  • rechargeable batteries

Nothing collected will be sent to landfills.

The provincial government says it has plans to establish a permanent e-waste management program later this year for residential and commercial waste equipment. Alberta already has one.

The federal government estimates more than 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste end up in Canadian landfills each year.

Depot collection will begin May 1. Specific times and dates will be confirmed over the coming weeks and additional depot locations will be announced.
