CTV News has obtained court documents outlining a lawsuit against a Steinbach-based doctor and Winnipeg dentist involving the family of a young girl who ended up brain damaged after routine dental work.
Last October, four-year-old Jairlyn Roulette was put under general anesthetic for work that included a cap, extraction and filling. She went into cardiac arrest about 30 minutes into the procedure.
The family said Jairlyn cannot talk, walk or feed herself. They are looking for compensation to cover her long-term care.
The statement alleges both the doctor who administered the anesthetic and the dentist were negligent in their duties to provide care and treatment for Jairlyn.
Dr. Ray Warkentin, the doctor who administered the anesthetic, declined to comment about the case, but did offer his deepest sympathies to the family.
All of the claims outlined in the statement have yet to be proven in court.
Last year, more than 2,300 pediatric dental surgeries were performed under anesthesia at Children's Hospital, Misercordia Hospital and Maples Surgical Clinic. While Manitoba Health regulates pediatric dental surgeries performed in hospitals, the province said it doesn't oversee surgeries done in private clinics.
Currently, the Winnipeg Regional Health authority is completing a pediatric dental surgery audit that will look at wait times.
