A new sign unveiled Friday welcomes visitors to Winnipeg’s Fort Garry neighbourhood. The Fort Garry Historical Society gifted the sign to the city to mark the historical significance of the area, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012.

The illuminated limestone and concrete sign reads, “Fort Garry welcomes you.”

Private donations paid for the sign. Mayor Sam Katz contributed $7,500, and area councillors Jenny Gerbasi, John Orlikow, and Justin Swandel each contributed $10,000.

“This welcome sign is a wonderful gift to the community and celebrates Fort Garry’s importance to our city, past and present,” Katz said in a news release.

The neighbourhood began with the expansion of Métis settlements on the east side of the Red River. The Fort Garry Historical Society formed in 1971 to promote and preserve the history of the area.
