Friday morning Winnipeg Animal Services Officers responded to a call near Henderson Highway in the Elmwood area where they discovered a large snapping turtle only 20 feet from the roadway.

Animal Services Officers estimated the male turtle was more than 30-years-old.

It was released back into the river system.

According to the curator at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, snapping turtles are a native species common to Manitoba waterways.

Their natural habitat ranges as far southeast as Florida.

Social media in Winnipeg was already abuzz after reports of another large snapping turtle found this week in King's Park.
