Winnipeg's Filipino community has been busy getting crafty for Christmas.
On Sunday, the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival held its first parol-making contest at the Garden City Shopping Centre.
A parol is a five-point star lantern symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem, a popular Christmas decorations in the Philippines.
"Every Christmas, we gather as a family and make parol,” said Aida Champagne of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.“It’s made of sticks of bamboo and we put them together like a star and decorate them."
The community hopes to pass the tradition down to the new generation of Filipinos now in Manitoba.
Judges were asked to evaluate the parols, based on originality, use of indigenous materials and their overall impression.
