A man from Shamattawa has been charged with setting fire to the home of a local RCMP officer.

The fire occurred in the early morning of May 28. The officer was awoken by the smoke alarm. His single-wide trailer was filled with smoke.

The officer managed to escape without serious injury.

RCMP arrested Randie Leonard George Hill, 29, on Saturday without incident.

Hill is now facing charges of:

  • arson endangering human life
  • possession of incendiary material
  • and six counts of breach of recognizance

Hill is in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Thompson on June 3.

In a news release on Monday, Shamattawa RCMP thanked the Chief and Council and community members for their assistance and support during their investigation.

According to the RCMP website, the Shamattawa RCMP detachment consists of one sergeant and six constables.

About 1,200 people live in the remote community in the northeast corner of the province on Gods River.
