WINNIPEG -- A Manitoba NDP cabinet minister has apologized for calling a Conservative MLA a "fascist."

Municipal Affairs Minister Drew Caldwell apologized to the legislature today, a day after MLA Reg Helwer raised the issue with the speaker.

Helwer said he was responding to the government's throne speech on Tuesday when Caldwell heckled him.

The remark was not recorded in Hansard.

NDP house leader Dave Chomiak apologized Wednesday on behalf of Caldwell, who was absent, and called the word "reprehensible."

Caldwell said he was sorry for making a "generalized comment" which he said many do "in the heat of the moment."
