An orphaned polar bear cub that arrived at the Assiniboine Park Zoo Monday night is adjusting well, according to zoo staff.
The 11-month-old female was found wandering alone near the airport in Churchill last week.
She was captured by officers from Manitoba Conservation.
An extensive search of the area failed to locate the cub's mother.
Dr. Jim Duncan of Manitoba Conservation said a bear that age would not survive in the wild on its own so it was deemed a good candidate for the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at the zoo.
The head of the zoo's veterinary services told CTV News the cub is slightly underweight and has a few broken teeth but is otherwise in good health.
The bear is under quarantine at the zoo while staff continue to monitor and assess her.
Zoo officials do not have a timeline for when the now 94-pound cub will be displayed to the public.
Staff at the zoo say the cub will be introduced to the zoo's male bears when she is old enough and, if all goes well, she could participate in a captive breeding program.
