RCMP are treating death of a woman on the weekend in Ethelbert, Man. as a homicide and are treating the death of a man whose body was later found during the investigation as suspicious.
Officials previously said they were called to a home in the community, which is located about 225 km north of Brandon, on Jan. 19 where a woman was found deceased.
They said they are treating her death as a homicide. While investigating that case, RCMP discovered the body of a man on property grounds.
Community members said a woman in her seventies named Elsie Steppa lived at the home. They said a man who claimed to be her nephew named Harry Jones also lived there.
People in the village haven't seen or heard from either of them for several days.
RCMP said Jan. 21 they have an idea who the woman is, but her identity has not yet been confirmed.
Autopsies for both the man and woman were scheduled for Jan. 21 in Winnipeg, but results have not been released.
The town's mayor said some community members are upset.
"It's mostly younger families concerned about the children. And the only advice I can give them is keep them within eyesight," said Ethelbert Mayor Mitch Michaluk.
"We are saddened of what has happened in the community," he said.
Michaluk said this is the first time a homicide has been reported in the community.
RCMP continue to investigate. No arrests have been made.
