Mans best friend is turning into the teachers pet.
The Winnipeg Humane Society just completed a new program called "See Spot Read."
The eight-week program paired children with reading difficulties with so-called therapy dogs.
The dogs are chosen for their loving nature, and their ability to sit there and listen.
The pilot project ran for two-months with students from the Pembina Trails School Division.
A spokesperson for the Humane Society says they have seen improvements in the student's reading skills.
"There's no judgment going on. I think often in traditional settings we can really feel self-conscious when we're talking to someone. A dog breaks that down," said Aileen White of the Winnipeg Humane Society.
The humane society is hoping to secure corporate funding to continue the program for the next three-years.
