Dozens of people gathered outside a Point Douglas rooming house Thursday afternoon.
It was there on May 7 that Winnipeg police found the remains of Myrna Letandre.
She went missing in October 2006.
Sources say British Columbia police tipped off local authorities to search the home, following information revealed during an investigation of a man whose wife disappeared in B.C.
No charges have been laid in Letandre’s death.
But her family says the discovery of her remains has led to closure.
“It's quite difficult for the family at this time, you know, knowing now she's been gone for quite some time," says Barry Anderson, Letandre’s cousin.
Anderson describes her as a kind, loving, warm-hearted woman who wouldn’t hurt a fly.
He says the family has planned a burial in the coming days on Fairford First Nation in Manitoba’s Interlake, where Letandre is originally from.
He also issued a plea for people to come forward with information about other cases of missing and murdered Aboriginal women to help their families, some of who were present at the Lorne Avenue vigil as a show of support.
