The city’s battle against cankerworms has come to an end but you might still walk into their sticky cobwebs for another week or so.

The Insect Control Branch announced their cankerworm control program has treated the last remaining areas of the city. They had targeted areas of the city with heavy foliage where there was a significant risk of leaf damage by the worms.

The hungry critters feast on the leaves and can do significant damage to the canopy if their population is allowed to grow.

The city said most cankerworms have ceased feeding by now and will soon move into the next part of their life cycle, which takes place underground. Winnipeggers can help reduce the cankerworm population in the future by putting up tree bands on the September long weekend.
