For families on a budget, generic brand products can help save cents and dollars during each trip to the grocery store. But do the products measure up in quality and taste to their more expensive name-brand counterparts?

Kara Jones is a mother of three and said when you go name-brand, you’re not running the risk of getting a product you don’t like.

“You know you’ll like it, so you just stock up,” said Jones. “There’s no risk involved in name-brand products.”

Jones said she does occasionally buy generic-brand foods but is more likely to opt for name-brand. To save money, Jones looks for sales on name-brand items.

But CTV News wanted to know if spending the extra cash was worth it. Karen Rocznik had Jones’ three children, Malachai, Tahlyia and Judah judge an array of regular vs. name brand products.

For most items, the kids preferred the generic brand to their name-brand alternatives.

When it was over, Jones said she would reconsider her aversion to generics.
