Winnipeg police are not treating the discovery of human remains in St. Boniface as suspicious.

Crews working near Tache Avenue uncovered a human skull just before 10 a.m. Wednesday.

A worker told CTV News crews dug up the skull underneath a sidewalk along Avenue de la Cathedrale, near the historic St. Boniface cemetery.

Police said numerous bones were later recovered five to six feet under the surface of the street.

Police said they believe the discovery of the bones is “historical” in nature and not a criminal matter. Workers in the area said the bones appeared to be part of an old grave.

Archaeologists were called to examine the scene and police cadet units remained on scene to supervise the dig.

Winnipeg police said they will no longer be investigating the matter.
