A young couple says they are lucky to be alive after winds ripped apart their new home.
Donovan Boudreau and Destiny Young had only been living in their mobile home for one month when it was destroyed by up to 150 kilometer per hour winds.
They were making dinner when the storm hit with first rain, then hail and then the strong winds.
“It just started picking both sides [of the trailer] up and next thing you know we were on the wall,” said Boudreau.
“I remember going on the floor. I just seen the fridge go towards him and I woke up and he was screaming my name,” said Young.
Boudreau and Young were both knocked unconscious. When they woke up they managed to dig themselves out of the rubble and run through the bush to a neighbour’s house.
Both were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries and given a CT scan.
Damage extensive along Lake Manitoba
Just as people were starting to rebuild after the 2011 flood, another blast of extreme weather hit St. Laurent.
Extreme winds hit the area hard, causing major damage to homes and cottages along Lake Manitoba Sunday evening.
James Deighton’s family cottage had its roof ripped off by winds. Last year, the cottage was hit by flooding. He said he’s relieved he wasn’t at the cottage when the winds hit Sunday night.
“It’s a serious loss for my family but I still have my family,” he said.
Dorothy and Sheldon Herron were inside their cottage when the storm hit. The couple said they took cover behind their refrigerator to avoid flying debris.
"The wind came and the glass went crash and it all went flying across,” said Dorothy.
The couple had just rebuilt their property after being flooded last May.
"People were just starting to get back to some state of normalcy after a long rebuild and now hit with this, it's like how much more can people sustain?" said Earl Zotter, the reeve of the RM of St. Laurent.
Zotter said wind and trees knocked out power to the area, creating extensive damage to the infrastructure.
Hydro officials said 250 customers were without power. Crews arrived on scene shortly after the storm and have been on scene ever since. They are working to have power restored by Tuesday.
Officials with the RM of St. Laurent say no other injuries were reported.
