Big changes to the MTS Centre in downtown Winnipeg will unfold this summer.

True North Sports & Entertainment calls it the biggest expansion since the facility opened in 2004.

The third floor will get a makeover as part of a six-year plan to modernize the arena.

True North plans to expand floors, move and improve bathrooms and knock down walls. The company said all the changes are for the fans.

“Probably for the first time since we've opened this building, we are undertaking some very significant, fundamental and material structural changes,” said Jim Ludlow from True North.

Ludlow wants the MTS Centre to serve as a place where fans can grab a bite to eat and socialize before games and concerts.

“What we're trying to do is ensure we bring the fan experience up at 300-level up as much as we possibly can,” said Ludlow.

All construction work will take place within the building this summer. Ludlow said it will last for 90 days.

He said Skywalk foot traffic will be diverted but not disrupted, much like during Jets games or concerts.

Ludlow said True North will spend around $20 million modernizing the arena over the next six years.

“You know sort of in line with expectation for a tier-one NHL building with a tier-one NHL team playing in it,” said Ludlow.
