New numbers from Manitoba Public Insurance disclose the areas seeing the most collisions involving pedestrians in Winnipeg.
The intersection to see the most collisions is Jefferson Avenue and McPhillips Street, where nine pedestrians have been hit between 2008 and 2012.
Others reporting high numbers include Arlington Street and Notre Dame Avenue, where eight people have been hit, Cavalier Drive and Portage Avenue, where another eight have been struck, and River Avenue and Osborne Street where seven pedestrians have been hit.
On Tuesday, two children were seriously injured when a van hit them at Bishop Grandin Boulevard and St. Anne’s Road. Earlier this month, a collision sent a 90-year-old man to hospital after he was hit by a semi on Portage Avenue.
Some pedestrians who spoke to CTV News said they’ve nearly been struck numerous times.
“It’s devastating…I’m 21-years-old and I’ve been almost hit 30 times,” said pedestrian Carrie McDonald.
Manitoba Public Insurance said part of the onus falls on motorists, but add pedestrians have to play by the rules too, which is not always the case.
“Don't walk distracted. Don't walk impaired, particularly when you're crossing intersections,” said Ward Keith from Manitoba Public Insurance.
CTV News asked the City of Winnipeg if new safety measures are being looked at to reduce collisions at some of the intersections.
A spokesperson said the city will provide information Friday.
