The province hopes to strike a balance between forestry activities and habitat preservation with a new woodland caribou recovery strategy.
Boreal caribou are listed as a threatened species in Manitoba with a total population between 1800 and 3100.
The province released a draft document Wednesday. It’s a 10-year plan to support ongoing conservation efforts. It includes population monitoring, and managing up to 80 percent of the suitable caribou habitats in Manitoba's boreal forest.
Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh says the proposed plan supports environmental protection, while ensuring communities and industry dependent on the boreal forest continue to prosper.
“The continued presence on the boreal landscape in Manitoba of the woodland caribou is thought to be a sign of a healthy ecosystem," said Mackintosh.
