The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. are warning the public not to consume Hawaiian Kettle Style Potato Chips in Sweet Maui Onion flavour. The chips may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
The chips have been sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. is voluntarily recalling the product. Costco has not indicated whether the chips can be brought back to their stores for a refund.
The chips are sold in a 908 g package with a UPC of 0 11594 03201 8. All Best Before code dates from 10 MR 09 (March 9, 2010) to 10 JN 07 (June 7, 2010) and in between those dates could be contaminated.
Salmonella-contaminated food may not look or smell spoiled, but eating it can cause salmonellosis, a food borne illness that can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In healthy people, it can cause short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, pain, and diarrhea.
