The RCMP in Manitoba is participating in National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day on Saturday, May 10.
A list of locations accepting unused or expired medications is available at: http://www.healthsteward.ca/returns/manitoba
The purpose of the program is to keep prescription and over the counter medications out of the hands of young people.
In a news release, the RCMP stated that improperly disposed of medications can also be hazardous to the environment if poured down the drain or thrown in the trash.
The program originated with the Niagara Regional Police Service and has since spread to police services across the country with the involvement of the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs.
“It is an opportunity for all Canadians to safely dispose of unused pharmaceuticals so they cannot harm others, especially young people,” stated CACP President Chief Constable Jim Chu.
Although the National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day aims to raise awareness about the issue, most urban and rural pharmacies in the province participate in the Manitoba Medication Return Program and will accept unused or expired medications year round for safe disposal.
