The death of a 16-year-old boy in Alonsa has left the community and his classmates struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"They're taking it pretty bad today," said Preston Whitford. "There are a lot of tears."

RCMP continue to investigate, but said an autopsy has been completed and foul play is not suspected in the death.

People in Alonsa, west of Lake Manitoba, said a neighbour found the boy lying in the snow outside of a home Tuesday morning. He was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

"I was pretty shocked the morning I heard of it because he was a pretty good kid – he didn't really argue with anyone. He was always happy," said Whitford.

People in Alonsa said the teen lived in a community about 25 km north of the town, but was in Alonsa to play hockey on Monday night.

Officials lowered a flag at the Alonsa School where the boy attended classes for the last five years.

Grief counselors have been called in to help students cope.

RCMP have not released further details on the cause of death, but said they will continue with witness interviews and toxicology reports.
