Winnipeg police announced Tuesday that a driver has been charged for a collision in April on Portage Avenue this year that claimed the life of Kendall Wiebe, 27.
Wiebe, a mother of three, was closing up an Ultracuts Hair Salon in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue with a co-worker when a Jeep Liberty slammed through the front of the store on April 7.
She was rushed to hospital but died from injuries. A 25-year-old woman was also hit and survived.
Police launched an investigation following the jeep crash.
“A comprehensive examination was performed and it has been determined that the vehicle was mechanically sound at the time of the collision. The investigation has ruled out mechanical failure,” said police in a statement Oct. 2.
The investigation involved Transport Canada and Chrysler, the maker of the jeep, and led to charges being laid against the driver.
“We are drawing the conclusion that the collision resulted because of human error,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen from Winnipeg police.
Police said there was likely no intent to harm Wiebe or her co-worker. They also said the vehicle involved was a rental.
“This individual may not have been familiar with the vehicle,” said Michalyshen. "We've all been dealing with this horrific incident for some time and certainly realize that people have been looking for answers."
For those close to Wiebe, the crash still leaves unanswered questions about why it happened.
“Yeah, there's going to be some charges laid, but the real question in my mind is how is this even possible to happen?” asked Steve Cancilla, who was engaged to Wiebe. “She always had a smile on her face, really outgoing, like a jokester.”
For now, he takes comfort in her artwork featured throughout their home and with his three children. He said he’s trying to move on with his life, one that he adds will always have a hole in it.
