Manitoba RCMP are blaming the icy roads for two separate collisions Monday.

One crash in the Turtle Mountain area near Boissevain involved a vehicle going over a guard rail. One person was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Near Stonewall, one person was taken to hospital in stable condition after their vehicle slid through a four-way stop and collided with a semi in the intersection.

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation deployed sanding and salting crews during the weekend and again Monday morning to deal with icy roads, after freezing drizzle hit Sunday evening and overnight.

The province said the early action of highway crews left many roads in better condition than expected.

Motorists are advised to take this type of weather into account when commuting this time of year.

The freezing rain caused problems in other ways too.

Manitoba Hydro said power lines in southwestern Manitoba and parts of south-central Manitoba were left covered in ice.

Because the problem isn't widespread, and it's only localized to certain areas, crews are doing patrols to find out where they need to remove the ice.

Manitoba Hydro spokesperson Scott Powell said planned outages will happen in the community of Carroll, south of Brandon, as well as areas south of Killarney and in Pierson.

Powell said this is a preventative measure and will allow crews to roll ice off the lines or melt the ice.
