In the weeks since an earthquake and typhoon hit the Philippines, scam artists are trying to take advantage of people's generosity.

The president of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba has received calls from people in the community saying they have been approached by people saying they are collecting money for the centre’s disaster relief donations.

Lito Taruc was approached himself in the Walmart parking lot near Polo Park. He said he is angry people would take advantage.

Winnipeg police said they haven't received reports of the apparent scam, but said in times of tragedy scam artists move in.

Police recommend donating to reputable organizations with legitimate track records.

The Government of Canada has a list on its website of registered charities.

It also has information on the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund.

The Canadian Red Cross is also collecting donations.
