A Winnipeg woman has pleaded guilty to a careless driving charge that resulted in the death of two construction workers on St. Mary's Road in September 2007.

Michelle Lodewyks was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

The 27-year-old received a $3,000 fine and has lost her driver's license for three months.

Raymond Kereluk and Bernie Vachon were killed when they were hit by a car.

The impact threw them 25 metres and caused extensive injuries.

They were installing underground cable at the time and were standing near a manhole cover at the corner of St. Mary's Road and Kingston Row.

An accident reconstruction showed that speed was not a factor in the crash and neither were drugs or alcohol.

Lodewyks' lawyer Jeff Gindin says his client proceeded from an intersection and did not see an oncoming car.

Her actions caused the other car to lose control and hit the pair of workers.

Gindin says his client is profoundly remorseful.

Lodewyks recently completed her master's degree in Disability Studies.
